The Confusing World of Leather Types
With so many different types of leather available, many people are often confused by the differences between them. Aside for the various origins of leathers, there are also many different processes that change the leather properties. Some of the common leather types are below:
Aniline Leather: a dying process that enhances the natural properties of the leather. This is the most natural of the leathers, however this means that it is also the most fussy to take care of.
Semi-Aniline Leather: a dying process that reveals the natural properties of the leather to a lesser extent, and can result in a greater range of colours. Semi-Aniline is a halfway between aniline leather and pigmented leather.
Pigmented Leather: a dying and coating process which allows the widest variety of colours and the longest wear. Pigmented leather is available in full grain (natural), corrected grain (gives a more uniform appearance), finished split leather (similar to corrected grain, however weaker) and antique grain (gives an aged appearance). Pigmented leather is the least natural type of leather in appearance; however has the advantage of being the most durable.
Nubuck Leather: a process that gives a velvety finish to the surface, usually using aniline dyed leather.
Suede Leather: a process that gives a more pronounced velvety finish to the surface of the leather usually using a split.

Faux leather is also widespread across all applications and offers a lower alternative to genuine leather products. Faux leathers are not made from real leather, and are often polyurethane or vinyl which can emulate the look and feel of real leather. There are a few advantages to faux leather aside from the obvious cost advantage. One of the most significant is the fact that they can be cleaned very easily. This makes faux leather especially good for children’s furniture. The Morgan Children’s Table with Sophia Red Chairs is the perfect example of children’s furniture using faux leather or leatherette. This gives the luxurious appeal of leather without the high price tag.
